Art classes in South Austin

Private drawing and painting instruction for ages 8 and up — built on fundamentals, not one-off craft projects.

Fundamentals first

A lot of children's art programs produce a nice-looking project every week and no lasting skill. This one works the other way around: students learn to see accurately first, and the finished pieces follow from that.

  • Observational drawing — proportion, angle, negative space
  • Value and light before color is introduced
  • Composition and how to plan a piece rather than start in a corner
  • Color mixing and the medium that fits the student
  • Critique — learning to look at your own work and name what is wrong

Students build a real portfolio over the year, which is genuinely useful for anyone considering an arts magnet program or applying to a school with a portfolio requirement.

Questions

Art class FAQs

What ages are the art classes for?

Ages 8 and up, including adults. Classes are taught one-on-one so the material is matched to the individual student rather than a group average.

Do I need to bring my own supplies?

Starter materials are provided for the first few sessions. After that the studio gives you a short, specific supply list rather than a generic art-store checklist.

Is this drawing, painting, or both?

Both. Students begin with observational drawing because it underpins everything else, then move into value, composition and color work in the medium that suits them.

Can art be combined with music lessons?

Yes — several students take both at the studio. Scheduling back-to-back sessions on the same day is usually the easiest arrangement for families.

Do students build a portfolio?

Yes. Work is sequenced so students finish the year with a coherent body of work, which matters for anyone considering an arts magnet program or a school application.
